Will the nails damage a live tree?

I have had mine up for two seasons and tree is fine.

Is there any way to use this without making holes in the tree?

As other responders have said, there really isn’t any way other than small nails to hold this up which is why it looks so “real” when placed on the tree.

Wat size and type screws should i use to mount item

I don't think you can buy screws that will work. The holes are not big or deep enough to use screws effectively. Even if they were the, plaster in too thin the hold. I resorted to placing long looped wires in each of the two holes and filling them with glue to hold them in place (I used hot glue). I then hung the looped wires to nails and cut to proper length . The problem then is that wind will cause flopping and eventually break the fragile plaster. I solved the problem (so far) by tightly tying a thin dark plastic coated wire under the elf's chin and tree, it looks okay. Perhaps the manufacturer will design a better way to attached these in the future.
