Used as a filler or as a modelling material; sets as hard as stone over time
Milliput offer several differently coloured epoxy putty-fillers each of which is referred to as a 'grade'. They don't specify on the packaging or company's web page whether some grades may be specifically for use with wood, metal, or other materials and as far as is known they are identical and universal in application; it may be advisable to opt for best possible colour match where relevant. 'Milliput Standard Yellow-Grey 113.4g Pack/Packs (2)' was the chosen variety and comes as a pack of two poly-wrapped rolls which need to be mixed in equal amounts. Best cut with a knife as required and the remainder re-wrapped for later use. In principle, if stored in a cool place, the unused portions could last for some time. Once mixed, if there is a surplus and you need to work in stages, wrap the surplus and place it the freezer for up to 36 hours before reusing it.Usable as a filler, for repairs and as a modelling material, it is intended to bridge gaps but not specifically cracks for which there are better solutions. It is also far less expensive than others of the type. Some of the more expensive brands have been used since the material was first available and had been found useful in a variety of situations but mostly as a filler or for repairs including a broken lamp socket and a broken ceramic pot and several more now forgotten. In a couple of instances, it had been used on wooden objects - a jewellery box and a door to re-affix hinges that had worked loose and where the pins or screws could not otherwise be replaced. It was also once used to repair an indicator mounting for a motorbike.Although claimed to be reformulated and improved in that hand protection may no longer be essential, that remains a strong recommendation and especially for those with a known history of chemical sensitivity. Unmixed, or mixed and still workable, intense skin irritation is possible but once fully hardened it is safe to handle. It needs to be kneaded to mix the two components and, once mixed until the colour is even, the hardening process commences. Although it is fairly easy to mould into shapes, when filling holes in masonry it may be necessary to roll it into a sausage and then to tamp it into the depths. With this, it typically requires about 3 hours before it becomes moderately hard and unworkable but hardens over the following hours; higher temperatures speed up the process and cooler ones slow it. Tools used during mixing, smoothing etc should be immediately and thoroughly washed to remove all possible traces as that may later prove impossible once it sets hard. Once hardened but not necessarily fully cured, it can be tapped, screwed into, filed or sanded, painted etc.Milliput's epoxy putty is a fraction of the price of most others and supplied in a more generous package quantity. It appears to be as equally usable and as capable as other brands previously used. However, this had only recently been used for the first time and time will tell how effective it had been.
