I want to use this to keep my dog off the kitchen counter. Will the alarm shut itself off and if so how long does the alarm sound?

This is a toy... at best it works sporadically. It stopped functioning completely after 20 minutes. I would obtain a standard motion detector chime to use for the manner stated in your question.

What size batteries does it use?

Micro Motion Alarm needs 2 AAA batteries (not included).

How do you turn this thing off?

Please push the button to the middle; all of the way to 1 side is motion detection, all of the way to the other side is vibration detection, and the middle is off.
