Will this achieve 2000mb/s when connected to the thunderbolt (40gbps) port of a 2018 macbook pro?

No, Write speed I got is 634mbps and read 928mbps, also slows down significantly on anything over 5gb

Can I use this with my Mac without downloading software or reformatting?

Yes. I use it on a 2014 MPB, OS Catalina. Didn't need to do anything and it's always worked a treat. I did have to buy a USB 3 to USB C adapter because I have an older Mac. But that shouldn't be a problem with newer MacBooks, which all have thunderbolt inputs.
