Clever
This is a clever device. All studies show that cats train better through rewards and not punishments, which is why I bought this.It really only took my cat a day to learn to use this scratching post. My problem is that he has learned to push the outer tube up so that it falls on the lever and drops food. He also has a tendency to bite it instead of scratch it to get food. I have yet to see him actually scratch it.I think this product needs to be a bit taller for it to really be used as a scratching post, but it's a great idea, and if you really work with your cat you may be able to get him to use it as it ought to be. The fact that you can fill the bottom with litter or sand to keep it stable also really helps.

It's a hit
Oh my gosh, this feeder is such a hit with my cats, keeps them entertained for hours. I taught one cat how to scratch and make the food release, and she will work on it very happily for ages. She very pointedly lets me know when it is empty. Another cat has learned to hit it hard from the bottom of the tube and get food that way, but that really isn't what it's meant for. The other girl sits and watches, and swipes cat food from the efforts of the other two. What a fantastic item. There are also different tension levels, so you can make it easy initially, and harder as your cat gets more proficient. It's very good exercise for their upper bodies. One word of caution, you might want to take the tube off at night, as cats are nocturnal and do like their midnight snacks. You can hear the kachunk kachunk as they move the canister.

Waste of money
Cat didn't care for it. Never used it as a scratcher. Broke within a month, and is now adding to a landfill's contents. Terrible purchase; I would not recommend it.

how can I not say I like it if I am buying it for the third ...
When it comes to stars, how can I not say I like it if I am buying it for the third time. It has a longevity flaw. A tiny piece inside breaks and then the device no longer holds the kibble. But each one i bought lasted well over a year. My cat, however, used it all the time. We had to come up with something so that he could eat on demand so his brother would not eat his food because he has a special diet. It works best with smallish rounder kibble. You cannot claim the product doesn't work if your cat doesn't use it. It works. If you have a needy cat who wants a small bite of fresh kibble 10 times a day, i recommend you give it a try. These are probably the last stock on the planet, though.

A good idea, but....
It is very difficult for the cats to figure out what to do, and it's also difficult to set the tension low enough so that their claws will be effective in pulling the kibble or treats down. I would not buy it again.

pet toy
when used on non carpeted flooring it moves around quite a bit not allowing the cats to use it as a scratcher. One of my cats did however find that if he pawed at the underneath of the food dispenser food came out. It does act as a thinking toy in that way. I find it all over the house when he works at getting the food from it. Exercise, eating, critical thinking all in one, lol. It was what I intended when I bought it. I intended to eliminate giving them treats that had no nutritional value. Oh well, it got put to good use anyways.

Great training tool!
I very rarely write a review but this product deserves it. Hands down the best training tool for teaching a cat proper scratching areas. We have 2 kittens and they both figured this toy out quickly and love it! It keeps them from wanting to claw couches and other things. The only drawback is if you also have a dog. We have a golden who figured out how to open it up. Due to this, we have to make this toy a supervised one. Other then that, this is hands down one of the best training tools for cats!

Doesn't work
My cat refused to scratch the post. When he did, he did not have the power or the intellect to push the product down, instead I was doing it for him. If you see the product pic is lopsided, it will get to that every time you get frustrated and push down on the unit yourself. It will get more slanted the more you push it yourself. You will also get irritated seeing a lopsided feeder in your room. Not recommended for purchase. There are better alternatives to food holders.
