Red Tape and White Knuckles

I absolutely loved "Lois On The Loose" so was very interested to read this next installment about her world travels. Her North and South America journey as filled with great humor and a very matter-of-fact writing style. This volume is a bit more serious, though it does still have laugh out loud moments. I think this trip was more serious, with more difficult roads, tougher weather conditions and some potentially lethal countries Pryce chooses to ride through. I still gave it five stars because it is and exceptional story of travel to places I know I will never visit. Pryce does a fine job of describing the people and the places she encounters, giving the reader a good feeling of being right there with her. When she is despondent or terrified you feel the same, as well as sharing in her jubilation when things go right.Some motorcyclists will want more 'technical' information about what she packed, how she kitted out her bike and so on. That is not the kind of book it is. This is written as a very enjoyable story and is about the places, people and experiences Pryce has. I love it for being that. If you seek more practical information for your own travels I suggest getting Steph Jeavons' book.Some reviewers have made a fuss over Pryce's atheism and her commentary about it. I feel such reactions are overblown. Pryce is an atheist and views the world through that lens. While she does make occasional references to it all of them are in the context of comparison to the heavily religious countries she passes through. None of her comments are derogatory toward the beliefs of others. If anything, towards the end of the book you begin to wonder if Pryce has a few doubts about her beliefs. I applaud her honesty and for me it plays perfectly well in her story. I certainly do hope Pryce continues to travel and write for as long as she is able.

The Second book of Lois Pryce that I have read and the only issues I have with either is putting them down and when do I get to go.Although the first was a longer trip, it was less fraught with dangers, but no less the challenges. Her writing style was again such that it drew the reader in with narrative that put you right there in the hardships as well as the beauty of the places she traveled through.I don't know where she and her husband will be traveling next, but I hope they again bring us along.

Written in such a way that you can read it by the chapter, or country, and put it down til you can return. And you will. Better than Lois On TheLoose because the people Lois encounters are more believable. Also, thanks for the absence of most of the foul language. Still, the digital edition doesn't contain any pictures, sad but true.

Lois is definitely brave, some would say foolish. However, is a life without risk worth living, or even possible? Successfully managing significant danger is thrilling, and entertaining to read about. Well written, funny, and amazing.

Good writing. But not one day of this ride would I like to do. I've read both of her books and enjoyed them. Small bikes with minimalist gear. That I like. Can't stand these guys with 25000 dollar bikes, 10000 dollars in special equipment with vans and crews ollowing and they call it "adventure riding"

After riding solo from Alaska to the tip of South America, Lois took on Africa. There are lots of braggy, macho motorcycle adventure books out there. And others by authors who used their motorcycles as props to conquer personal demons or raise their self esteem. But Lois is a real adventurer *and* a great writer. Besides the combat zones, deep mud, kidnappers and boorish tourists, she found beauty, immense kindness and lots of laughs. I loved both her books and look forward to her next one on riding through Iran.

If she can do it. You can do it (if you want) But read about it in this book is almost being there in Africa your self .

I enjoyed reading about Lois and her solo African adventure. I look forward to her next book... I hope there is one. The story is fast paced and detailed enough to give you a great picture. Emotional enough to make you nervous, sigh with relief and laugh out loud.

The measure of a good book for me is when I get little waves of excitement during the day at the thought of continuing the journey—when I can barely wait until bedtime to read another chapter. It's one thing for an author to have 'been there and done that,' however amazing the experience; quite another to write about it in a thoroughly engaging manner. That's Lois's gift. She's not just a brave traveller, she's a brilliant writer. I feel bereft now that I've finished this book. I'm hooked, needing another Lois-fix.

I’m a big fan of Lois Pryce and her travels. The world is an uncertain place for personal safety, and is ever changing, but she coped with many hair raising situations well. A good read, though wish it was longer.

Great read, keeps you interested traveling with her and feeling every misfortune and joy of traveling alone.

Good, old fashioned adventure story. I found it a little irritating when Lois kept belittling the characters she met on her journey. If they were her sort of people, they were OK, but everyone else was patronised and laughed at, in comparison to Lois' logical, calm approach - supposedly.

What a ride!! So glad to have read this book - a real adventure! Well written and one hell of a story. Loved it. Looking forward to reading more of Lois's adventures.

Loved this book. You could get into the character of her travelling around. Perfect for a holiday read.

Thoroughly enjoyable! I love Lois' writing. Her low-key and candid descriptions of her adventures brought forth many laughs throughout the book. Having done some international motorcycling traveling myself, it all rang true.One small request would be a slightly more detailed account of the calendar. A few more dates would have helped, and I am still wondering when she got to South Africa.

Another cracking read from Lois. One tough cookie, but not afraid to tell it like it is. Including her fears and bloody scary and uncontrollable situations at times.Lois rode it so you don’t have to. Read the bloody book with a cat curled up on your lap and a cup of tea.Maybe take a loping circuit up some greenways afterwards and smile when you’re done.What’s next?

This was a great read, I've read her book on the American adventure which I enjoyed, I'm yet to read her book The Revolutionary Ride, I'll think about it but I'm a bit put off by paying $18 for a kindle book

Well written with a sense of humor and of drama! Much enjoyed the account of this very brave woman's trip through Africa!
