I'm using iphone 7. should i go for iphone 8? is there much difference between these two except the glass finish back?

No. Financially it doesn't make sense unless you absolutely must have the latest and greatest model to show off. Personally I upgrade only when Apple stops supporting my model with IOS updates. Right now I'm on 5S and IOS 11.0.3 which is the latest OS. It's different from Android where you have to depend on various manufacturers whims and fancies.

I have never used iphone..suggest which one i should go for between iphone 8 and iphone x

if you're a first timer on iphone avoid spending on iphone x - the functionality value add with face recognition and full screen display is bare minimum. Use the iphone 8 for a year or two and then pick the next generation phone when one comes in. iphone x still has a few interface challenges
