Physical meets digital

How did you come up with the idea for this product?

Soon after the iPad launched, it was clear that tablets were going to be a very popular medium for young children to engage with the world. But decades of research says that physical play is a really important part of early childhood development. At Tiggly, we saw an opportunity to bring physical play and tablets together in a unified physical-meets-digital experience. We started from classic toys and learning materials: the shape sorter, Cuisenaire rods, and alphabet fridge magnets, and we asked what would the 21st century version of these products be? We ended up with Tiggly Shapes, Tiggly Maths and Tiggly Words.

What makes your product special?

Humans think and understand the world through their hands. This is particularly true for young children and has driven the popularity of the Montessori method. Tiggly’s physical pieces are designed to physically demonstrate its properties e.g. a triangle is triangular in shape, a 3 counting rod is 3 units long. By physically experiencing the properties of the toy and then using the toy to create stories or solve problems on a tablet, young children are engaging more of their brain as they play. This is what makes the Tiggly experience so unique.

What has been the best part of your startup experience?

At Tiggly we are delivering a product experience that is developmentally appropriate for children. It is really satisfying to build a learning product that children love and that is different to any other experience out there. We get immense pride from seeing our customers engage and have fun with our products. We love that their experience is so much more than passively staring at a screen. We are engaging all their senses and encouraging them to stretch their understanding of geometry, maths and literacy.
