I don't know wh told you that but they're mistaken. The only fees come from streaming services such as hulu and Netflix not for the roku itself. There are actually a lot of free channels as well. Just plug in , connect to the your wifi and load the channels you want. I have two roku's and a roku tv and I've never paid a connection fee
