How long do the batteries last for?

It comes without batteries so will depend on your choice of AA. I used Energizer Lithium AA as weather temp wise supposedly can handle it vs Alkaline. I've these batteries in another outdoor light and 10mths still going.

I'm a bit confused about where the screws go...do I simply mark them where the holes are? It looks almost as if the base unit is meant to twist on.

You mark them at the narrowest part of the hole put the screws in leaving them slightly proud of the hole , place the base over the screw at the widest part and twist that will hold the base firmly. You can tighten the screws once the base is in place. Or loosen the screws if you have tightened them too much- hope that helps.

Will it detect motion of a car. As I want it to come on as I am entering the garage.

Should when within range 4M. If your drive upon entry is more then 4m then no u till break sensor. However my one is delayed (comes on after 3sec) or can only range 2-3M.

Would light be ok in an unlit cupboard where we hang coats?

I have fitted one just above an outside door, & I find the Auraglow is good enough for what I bought it for , enough light , comes on as I get to within a couple of feet of the door & its stays on for approx 15 seconds , but if the motion sensor picks up movement it will stay on longer , I think it will be fine for a cupboard
