I've used a lot of soldering irons and if you want a high-end unit for high-level hobby or moderate to high professional use, this is absolutely your baby. I've used Metcal irons I liked more, but the parts for those are WAY more expensive. Spare tips for Edsyn irons are astonishingly inexpensive, as these were designed to be floor-use aerospace assembly irons. In particular, if you like to use extremely fine tips, this is your baby, because you can get some for it and they work well. It's an investment, but all the replacement parts are EXTREMELY reasonable. The tips costs pennies and last forever. I have yet to blow a heating element. These things are classy, accurate, and bulletproof. Totally recommended. Not terribly portable but will pack out well into a 7.62mm belt-feed ammo can, which you can find at any surplus shop, with a little foam, and that's what I recommend as a case.Oh, and consider getting a second pod so you can hold a desoldering attachment, iron with alternate tip, etc.

Absolutely perfect thermostatically controlled tip temperature!
After using soldering guns and pencils for many years I purchased a Loner some years back. Having a thermostatically temperature controlled soldering station is an incredible improvement over both a simple soldering pencil or one of those soldering stations where you can set a dial the adjust tip temperature but without thermostatic control the tip temperature doesn't stay right where you want it. This Loner ran for about six years on its first replaceable tip -- it's now on its second. Tips and parts are readily available. This year I purchased a second one for use when I repair remote site equipment that can't be brought to my workbench. I highly recommend this thermostatically temperature controlled soldering station!

Shop no more, this is the one you want.
I have used Edsyn soldering irons for years at work, so when my old cheapie gave out, I looked on here. And what do you know?!? There's a 951-SX, from Techni-tool no less, at a good price...Shop no further, add it to your cart, done deal. For bench work, you can't beat the 951-SX, even compared to other Edsyn irons, such as the CL-1080. It heats up quickly; turn it on, and by the time you go wet the sponge, come back and sit down, it is ready to go. Tip changes are quick and easy, and with just a few types you can handle most electronic repairs and projects. I've always liked the feel of the 951 as well. Good ergonomics; light weight, well balanced. As I said above, shop no more. For me, at least, this is the one to have.

Awesome tool
I've only used Weller soldering irons previously, most recently a WESD51. For modestly more money, the 951SX is a completely different experience. It's got more power so it maintains tip temperature and let you work more quickly with each joint. The unit itself is far more robust and well designed - and it appears that every single piece is sold separately should repair be needed. Sweet! Couple this with an Edsyn Fuminator and you'll be all set.I am not a professional electronics tech but I've got a modest amount of experience. This iron is everything I would want - it works great

Great Iron for Pro or Experimenter
My old soldering iron's tip was too large to work on the tiny SMD (Surface Mount Device) parts. I asked the foreman at an assembly house that builds 1,000s of SMD electronic card products per month, and he told me his crew really likes the Edsyn 951SX. After using it for over a year, I can see why. The tips are much narrower then my old Weller iron and lets you solder separate .025" centered SMD pins with relative ease. The .050" centered pins are a cinch. The temperature control feature is useful when doing soldering to large and small leads/lands with different solder types, but requires some experimenting to obtain the best result. Edsyn offers a wide selection of interchangeable tips for this model, that change out and heat up in short order.

Excellent soldering station !
Great soldering station, albeit a little ugly . Heats up quickly ; tempererature control on the nose. The only drawback is that the actual hand tool cord is a tad short ...needs another 6 inches (as pretty much all us guys do ).

Outstanding!
A very nice soldering station. Plenty of power - from room temperature to ~350 degrees C in about 5 seconds. The pencil is quite comfortable to hold and the water reservoir for the sponge is a much appreciated clever idea. Overall a superb tool made in USA. I'm very pleased. I still have a soft spot for my Weller WTCPT, which still works fine, but the Edsyn Loner is a nicer setup.

Great Soldering Irons
I have been using these Edsyn soldering irons for the past 35 years in my electronics business. These irons are on 8 hours a day, 5 days a week and they typically last 7-8 years. They are an outstanding value.
