It works with the surface pro3 so if the 6 has the mini display port it should work.

I suspect your laptop hdmi is “send” only. Willl send a picture to a display from the laptop but not accept a signal to display from another device.

Can I use it to connect a Lenovo to an iMac to use it as a monitor?

Mine connects my MacBook Air to my BenQ monitor, so I would say yes, probably. However, my MBA is a 2012 model and you need to make sure you get the correct cable for the age of your iMac.
