Great concept, fun but frustrating execution
There is no doubt that the idea here is great and for the first half hour of play it is, but then the design flaws emerge. As soon as the braids wear in then you will find the cars stop constantly. Firstly the braid is not hard wearing enough and that causes it to split and move which doesn't help with drift based cars but also the front wheels then become a problem as they lift the car to the point of the braids no longer being able to make contact with the track once they've been worn in. Solutions are to change the braids which you effectively need to do every hour, take the front wheels off ( a stupid solution but it's a pretty successful one) or find an alternative 3rd party braid replacement which I saw an earlier reviewer mention. I'm going to try that. I reckon a creative solution with existing lego pieces from kids collection might do it also. Do I regret the purchase? Not really, it's fun in bursts and the kids love it while it's running smoothly and once we get a better solution for the braids then it will be fine. The cars look great and crash brilliantly, the drifting element makes the kids giddy with excitement and they love strategically trying to take out the other driver. We've had a few Scalextric sets and this is in some ways the best yet but in others it's a lot more frustrating..

Good fun for the kids
Purchased for my toddler during the Black Friday offers.A fun set, had no major problems so far. If the trigger isn't pulled hard enough the electrical connections between the track and cars tend to go.Also keep an eye on the connections (braids) on the cars base, the set comes with spares, so if the cars start playing up simply replace or adjust them.Personally keep the box and to ensure longevity pack it up when not in use.My son loves the fact the cars break on contact, the Lego style cars are easy to build but as the adult it's a little annoying from my part that I'm constantly having to build over and over again.*********UPDATE********** PROBLEM SOLVED**********It's a proven fact the Scalextrics braids are simply not upto the job. They are the main reason reviews are poor. The answer - do not buy replacement braids similar or manufactured by Scalextric. They are simply not worth the time or hassle. I would strongly advise to buy a better quality braid the brings the track to life. There's no more stop starting, no more fiddling around. What we have is hours of fun and consistency. The connections are 100x better, and the longevity of the braid completely outshines the Scalextric version. I purchased a 5m roll for £7 incl delivery. Good fun
Its a good set, and my son loves it. I would agree with comments that the contacts from the car to the track can cause the cars to stop, however, I tend to pull the contacts out before use and it seems to resolve this issue (but I might review buying better ones). The cars are built up from separate pieces that are sprung to ensure they explode on contact (which is great fun when they crash). However, we had two right hand rear wings for the robbers car when we opened the box. Disappointing on Christmas morning, but did not spoil the fun. Called scalextric/Hornby and they posted out a replacement set free of charge.

Great idea but some small issues
Got this for our 4.5 year old for Christmas. It's okay. The track goes in an right which he has soon got bored of. But the main issues we have had are with the cars. They fall apart really easily and it is frustrating getting them back together as he doesn't have the patience to do it himself yet. But apart from that the little bit that attached to the track keeps giving us trouble too. So much that one car doesn't work at all now.We took the advise of another reviewer at the time and bought two more cars that didn't break up (great tip) but had to return one of them too due to the part that attached to track breaking. We plan to get more track pieces to build on to it but overall I'm disappointed that we've had so much trouble with it. I even asked my husband if this was original scalextric. Given the name and how long they've been around I would not have expected these basic problems. I must add all problems occurred with about 5 days of Christmas too and with very little use.

A great idea but i would recommend Micro Scalextric over this
A great idea but needs more tweaking to be really good - as with all scalextric stuff you do need to keep tracks clean and the braids in good order but because these cars drift and swizz around the braids just do not last, the car performance is also very intermittent which is so disappointing as when you set it up for the kids you are forever being called by them to sort the cars out !!! sort of defeats the whole object of them amusing themselves !!!i also found the gimmicky lego style cars a little frustrating, its a sort of legobut not as you know it !! hard to push together and irritating as they break at every given moment, an unnecessary feature in my opinion. We also had a situation that when we opened after christmas the police car was incomplete, no body parts and no decals, this was sorted by seller but is just hassle you don't need.seriously if you want to go down the scalextric route i would recommend the Micro scalextric, we have a couple of sets and i can see them being used long after this one has been put away.

Great fun with one minor grumble
Bought this in a fire sale and got great value for money. I love it, the kids love it, my wife hates it. Perfect! So why 4 stars not 5? Well I do have a grumble. The track pieces are fine but the grey skid areas that clip around it are marginally too big. They don't quite all fit so you have to leave a couple out. It's perfectly useable if you choose carefully which pieces to omit (you need the curved ones the most!) but really they should all fit properly. But that's it. Besides that grumble this really is great fun!
