If you are thinking of tackling Joyce's Ulysses - you need this
Finally, after decades of trying to read Ulysses and never getting much beyond Chapter 3 and reading Chapter 18 after that, I have read the whole thing. This guide was essential for me, an American, with no knowledge of Dublin and only a smattering knowledge of Irish history. This book, along with Jim Norton's and Marcella Riordan's audio book, turned what I thought would be a fearsome task into a delightful, exciting journey. And there are a ton of guides of course. Anthony Burgess, Declan Kibberd, David Collard and maybe the recent Cambridge Press edition with all those maps and photos. Get those too.

The Best Guide!
I've read several guides and 'companions' to Ulysses - but if I could only have one, this is the book I'd choose. All you need - along with a well-annotated copy of Ulysses itself!

An invaluable and illuminating overview of Ulysses
I found this book threw light on both the overall structure and themes of ‘Ulysses’ and many intricate and delicious details of language and place.
