Great knives
* UPDATE 2 *I've owned these for over a year now. I'm still very happy with the purchase. They have only required a quick "toning" of the blade edge occasionally, even with frequent use. Part of this can be attributed to the fact that I only cut on wood and plastic cutting boards, never glass or stone. The blades are just as solid as they were when I purchased them -- no wiggling in the handles at all. The steak knives are definitely not forged, which is a bit of a disappointment to me, but I honestly can't complain about their performance. I even use them for paring apples and cutting cheese (the thinner blade glides through cheddar much better). I expect I'll get many more years of use out of this set.* UPDATE *Well I've had these for about 5 months now. I've never regretted the purchase once! Not so certain that the steak knives are forged, however -- they seem a bit thin and flexible, but I believe most steak knives are. The edges do not dull easily. I give them a quick sharpening maybe once every couple months. Glad I decided to go with a quality set from the get-go, rather than buying a few cheap sets that I never liked. Worth it, even if you're a bachelor who doesn't spend all his time in the kitchen (but wants tools that work when you do).* Original Review *Really like this product during the two weeks that I've owned it. Knives are sharp out of the box. The scissors don't come apart, which I wanted but don't need. Don't use them for meats. The knives have a decent feel and heft. The steak knives I'm not as certain about, because the blades are thinner and more flexible than the other blades. Not certain if they're forged or stamped. The bamboo block looks pretty nice. Will update once I've put them to through their paces.

Sharp with nicely balanced handles
I bought a set of knives in the same family about 15 years ago. I still use them every day and like them very much. I've hand-sharpened them a couple of times but they still cut well. I decided to get a set with a couple smaller knives in it, so I knew I wanted to stick with the same type of knife. The block to hold them is attractive and weighted nicely so you can pull out the one you want with ease. I have to admit I put them in the dishwasher, although I put them where they won't bounce around with anything else. They've held up even to that, although the end of the handles on some of the old knives are beginning to show a bit of rust. Considering how much less this set costs than some others, they are an excellent value, too.

Fantastic buy
These work every bit as well as my high dollar knives. Well made, fit and finish is nice. Bought these for a set in my trailer, they’re nice and compact for small spaces.

Good choice at a good price.
Purchased the set at the recommendation of Consumer's Reports. I had always used German Henkles or Wustof because of their superb crafstmanship, sturdy materials, well balanced knives and consistency of sharp edges. I also tried a couple of Shun Kershaw knives. All cost in the hundreds of dollars and perhaps are worth it. But when I needed an extra set for outdoor food preparation, I tried to be thrifty and glad I did!Any kitchen should have a minimum of a Chef's knife, a utility knife, a paring knife and a slicer; to chop, dice and slice. This set has all that one needs. The knives are esthetically beautiful but unbalanced because of heavy handles; one needs to apply more pressure when using the "blade grip". They are razor sharp from the factory and maintain their edge for a long time if properly cared for. Always hand wash and dry after use (otherwise may develop spots on the blade), NEVER wash in dishwasher, this will dull the edge. Always replace in the protective wood block instead of tossing in a drawer. This is a great buy of a very good set of knives at a very fair price, and almost a steal when purchased at Amazon.

but wasn't sure how to get good quality without spending a fortune
I needed new kitchen knives, but wasn't sure how to get good quality without spending a fortune. I did some research and found a website that reviewed kitchen knives at various price points. This set got great reviews, so I decided to check it out on Amazon.Originally I was looking at a larger set, but when I saw this set, I knew that it had everything I really needed for most jobs. I liked the fact that the block was fairly small and wouldn't take up much counter space, so I decided to try them out. Many reviews talk about how sharp these knives are, and they are right! They slice through meat, fruit and vegetables with almost not effort at all. In addition, they have enough weight to them to give them a good feel in your hand. I was concerned that they were going to be too light and feel cheap, but that wasn't the case. I wouldn't call them heavy, but definitely heavy enough to have a quality feel. You really do have to be careful with these knives because they are so heavy that they will sometimes surprise you!I owned a few Henckels knives in the past and really liked the quality, but even with hand washing and care, the handles develop small cracks over time. I don't see myself ever spending the money on Henckels knives again. I couldn't be happier with this set of Ginsu Chakara knives. I didn't realize that Ginsu made high quality knives in addition to the sets you used to see on TV. I have owned these for less than 3 months, so I can't attest to their longevity, but I hope to have them for years to come. So far, I have followed the manufacturer's instructions--I wash each knife by hand quickly after each use and dry completely, and they still look great. This small set of knives is so handy, and you can't beat the price or performance!

Good value and good quality
Medium-sized knives, very sharp and shaped perfectly. I would buy again without a doubt.

Pretty nice knife set
I bought this on sale for half price. Fairly nice set for knives made in China. Good first set for someone who can't spend hundreds on a German or Japanese set.

Knives came dirty/used?
Box looked unopened and new but multiple knives came greasy, dirty, maybe rusty or with some kind of “bloom” on them. I will have to see how they function after a thorough washing but right now I’m not very impressed with the quality control.
