Incredible street photos!
It was pure delight to sit down and turn the pages of Phil Penman's "Street" and to see how beautifully he photographs the ever-changing streets of NYC. He has a wonderful artistic eye and a knack for being at the right place at the right time to capture that special moment. In the "Citizens" section, I was amazed at the sheer number of quirky characters who Phil photographed as he roamed the streets, many of whom were in costume. I also enjoyed the "Celebrity" section on his career and perspective as a paparazzi. His wonderful antidotes on the chase provided the photos with another dimension, and it was very interesting how he included his fellow paparazzi in many of the shots as well. However, I don't know who was more dangerous, the drug dealers, the security guards, or some of the people he meets every day on the streets of NYC. As a fellow photographer I especially appreciated the section "The City", which includes cityscapes, architecture, as well as street scenes with a wonderful mastery for capturing spontaneous moments and great light. A number of photos were stunning silhouettes, many were photographed at night, and many were taken in different weather conditions. The large format, layout and sequencing for the book was also very well done. It is understandable why Phil Penman is ranked as one of the most influential street photographers alongside industry legends. Penman's "Street" is a wonderful portrait of an incredibly vibrant city. I will enjoy continuing to follow Phil's streets on Instagram.

Fantastic street photography from a master
If you're a fan of street photography and don't follow Phil Penman's work - you should.A hard copy of Phil's work - 200+ pages of it - ironically - provides an immersive experience that just isn't available through a screen.Embedded in these photos is a kind of connection with the people, the scene, the city ..it draws me in over and over. The sense of connection in these photos - its not surprising if you follow Phil online - he's one of the most interactive photographers I've encountered.

Phil Penman’s Book Brings NYC and Street Photography To Life.
My joy in making photographs is rivaled only by learning from someone who makes them better. Phil Penman’s new book Streets, a beautifully crafted work that documents New York City as it lives and breathes, teaches and inspires. Spend time with any of the images and you will find stories within stories. Embrace the images as a montage and you will have a new or renewed sense of the energy and grace at the heart of the City. Jump into the book, as I did, with a glass of wine and New York Is My Home (Dion and Paul Simon) playing in the background and you just might find yourself rocking the R train from Brooklyn to the Lower East Side for blintzes at Katz’s Deli.

Beautiful and wide ranging
You might have learned about this book from Phil’s excellent Instagram feed. What you will quickly realize from this beautifully printed book is that the quiet, contemplative work you are accustomed to seeing on Instagram was informed by a career as a celebrity photojournalist (paparazzo). The first section of the book, Citizen, consists mostly of street portraits of the characters of New York. Of the second section, Celebrity, the most interesting for me is what one might call celebrity environmental portraiture, including the paparazzi as design elements. The last section is admittedly my favorite as it’s his City work that drew me to the book in the first place. There is a thread of impeccable timing and composition that runs through his work. Recommended.

This is an outstanding collection of street photos by an artist at the top of his game.
I've been following Phil Penman's street photograph for awhile now, and this book is a wonderful, coffee table size collection of his best images. A former Paparazzi, there's a number of celebrity shots in this book, as well as Phil's splendid street shots. A Leica Akademie instructor whose workshops sell out, there's much to gain from studying Penman's work.

captures the heartbeat of NYC
from the irreverent and colorful characters roaming the streets in full costume, the madness of rush hour traffic, the celebrities, the snow flakes quietly falling in the early hours of the morning, to the towering skyscrapers that characterize the city's unmistakable skyline. these images all carry new york city's distinct presence.. a city that was home for a decade and now i miss more than i could have anticipated. the magic captured in this book takes me back right to the heart of it all. hopefully there's a second volume in the future! makes a great gift for anyone who loves the city that never sleeps.

Awesome street photos
The book is fantastic. It comes in a large format, printed on high quality paper.About the content, the book is splited into 3 parts: people photographs, celebrity snaps and city photos. All the sections are amazing but the one that I liked more is people photography. Phil's attentive and experienced look captures rare images of unusual moments. The photographs are absolutely spectacular: there are moments of humor, there are intriguing images, there are exciting images. There is no way not to like this book!

Good but disappointing.
"Street" seem to be a misleading title for this book. More than a third is about celebrities which I could not care about. The photographs are good but this is not worth the money, unless you love celebrities.

Amazing imagery and storytelling.
I have only ever bought one photo book in my life prior to this. I'm a semi-pro photographer myself and I absolutely love good street photography. I have to say, that Phil Penman, who has clearly worked his backside off over many years in the fast paced and pressurised photo journalistic environment has really excelled in this brilliant piece of work. The quality of the binding, the embossed spine of the book and the layout of the images ooze quality. Phil gives a very brief yet informative introduction to himself and then lets the images do the talking. New York is on my to do list to visit and photograph. The eclectic mix of individuals, with the eccentricity of those who pace the streets of New York is absolutely fascinating. Phil Penman clearly has an eye for really seeing rather than just looking at the environment he is working in. Then he tells a story through his imagery. There are interludes where he writes a short piece that allows the reader to delve a little deeper into this very talented artist. A little insight into the mind of such a person. I truly believe that this work is iconic and I expect it to stand the test of time. A record of life on the streets, warts and all. As I have said, this is the second photo book I have ever purchased for myself and it is truly inspiring. I highly recommend it.

Eccezionale

The best of street photography inside out
Phil Penman’s book is a stunning combination of supreme photography itself and in depth inside into what happens inside the photographer and in the streets before the shutter clicked. The pictures themselves evidence Phil’s amazing eye and instinctive analysis of a situation and soulful approach to the people he photographs. I loved how he pays tributes to the homeless, views celebrities and understands the city as both the scene and the soul of street photography. A fantastic book I love going back to over and over, discovering something new each time.

Feel, hear & breath NY
Phil's work first caught my attention a few years back when I've worked at a media agency. Flicking through thousands of pictures each day, Phil's were those to stand out, that made you take a closer look. Whether it's been a horde of Paparazzi trying to get a glimpse of the rich and famous, the frozen Hudson River or some kids skateboarding in front of New York's Skyline.. Phil's pictures came to life in front of your eyes.Leaving my job behind I still followed his work via social media and was more than delighted to hear he's publishing his first book. And "Street" is exactly what I love about Phil Penman's work.. a unique and vibrant portrait of (probably) the worlds busiest city, that immediatly makes you feel it's vibe, hear it's sound and breath it's air.
