GAC 100 by GOLDEN - Acrylic Polymer (32 oz.)

I've used this for a while to seal my boards (birch plywood), before gessoing, then painting in oils. The gesso alone wasn't nearly enough to prevent major oil absorption by the wood panel. This GAC100 is effective in stopping that. My painting process is much improved.

From the image presented is a piece of my walnut wood panel prepared and sealed with golden GAC 100. This is very important when painting oils on a wood material. The oils in the oil paint will penetrate into the wood, causing problems later with your archival quality. The oil needs to stay in the paint. The ceiling of the wood surface is very critical to keep the panel very flat and uniform in any kind of humidity or room conditions and if not treated properly may warp due to changes and moisture content or humidity in the air. So as a wildlife oil painter, all my wood walnut Baltic birch Jack, Richardson, and son hardboard are all sealed prior to doing my oil painting. Many thanks, Jimmy Springett wildlife painter.

Perfect for the job.

I used this to cover some inexpensive linen stretched canvases that a big chain store had on clearance. I wasn't confident that they'd used more than one coating of clear gesso, and I didn't want to then paint on it with my oil paints (oil paints are corrosive to painting surfaces, which is why they must be properly sealed, lest the paint make the linen or supports degrade over time, ruining your painting). I painted on two coats of this GAC, waiting for it to dry between each coat. Then, I used Gamblin oil painting ground over that (two coats, following their instructions). The reason I want to use an oil painting ground is that the oil paints are supposed to "sink in" less, losing less of the shine and being absorbed less by the ground. I have noticed sometimes painting on gessoed panels and canvases that there's a dulling effect that happens with certain paints. It goes away once you varnish a piece, but I hoped to minimize it from the get go and have more luster and better color. I like this product, it will be good to keep on hand for future preparation of canvases.

That picture is a bit misleading. Instead of getting 7 containers with easy applicators, you're really just getting one large 32oz. jar. The photograph may lead you to believe you're getting more than just 32 oz. You're not. Trust the product title.

I used this product to seal wood panels before making fine art paintings on them. It's a standard procedure to prevent staining seeping up from the wood. This was my first time using it, and I was really surprised at how quickly it was used up. So I had to buy another. It took 1-2/3 32 oz jars to seal approx 260 sq ft, two coats. The 2nd coat needed much less product.

It acts as a great wetting fluid for dry pigments and has binders to make your own colors. It also works as an extender or to make heavy body paints more fluid.
