An "inverter" is actually an appliance that converts DC power (such as found in your automobile) into 117VAC power (such as what is needed by common appliances bought in the USA, which you might want to enjoy in your automobile; important ampacity limitations apply.) The term "switching power supply" is what applies here, as opposed to "classic, heavy-transformer linear power supply." But consumers would be deterred by this clunky terminology and so some marketing genius hijacked "inverter" instead. Don't worry about it. Just suck it up and go with the flow, like all well-behaved consumers (like me, too) are supposed to do. The demigods of consumer electronics are on your side, this time. What's important here is that this microwave oven has the rare ability to attenuate the microwave energy, according to your button presses, so as to cook continuously at less-than full blast levels. For the four decades of their existence, microwave ovens have offered "medium" heating by using duty cycle, rather than attenuated (that means "turned down") energy levels. Duty cycle: cycling on (with full blast) interspersed with periodic rest times. OK, the duty cycle method works. AFter all, we're only trying to heat left over food, cold cups of coffee, etc. The food integrates (adds up) that pulse-regulated energy into a nicely-averaged re-heating process. That ability has been critical to the success in the marketplace, for microwave ovens ever since inception. BUT I PREFER the elegance of truly-throttled energy levels, as has been enjoyed every since the cave man invented fire and cooked his first sabre-toothed tiger, for dinner. Pardon me, if I wear animal skins, when I re-heat yesterday's coffee. Meanwhile, I really do understand the finer points of modern appliances.

My old Panasonic has an annoying design flaw - I have to push the "power" button 7 times to reduce it to 30% power. Does this one?

You actually have to push the button 8 times to get to 30 power. It really does not take much time or effort to achieve this level of power.

Why did you purchase a microwave oven instead of a toaster/oven? And where does a convection oven with a sensor fit in?

Microwave ovens heat previously cooked foods the fastest, work via dielectric heating. I like to cook on weekends and reheat food for family over the weekday to save time. It's handy for other types of cooking - melting butter & chocolate, refreshing a croissant, defrosting frozen foods, steaming vegetables, etc. I liked the Culinary Institute of America and Good Housekeeping endorsement of this particular model. Toaster oven is limited in reheating/cooking different foods. Convection oven is basically an oven with a fan and allows for faster and more evenly cooked foods (vs traditional oven). Sensor checks temperature of foods, such as in meats.

Is this microwave good for high usage, in an office?

The quick version of the answer is NO, these types of microwaves were designed & made for family to be use 2 to 6 times a day. Spend the extra money and get a commercial microwave, commercial version the door mechanisms (opening and closing) are designed for hundreds of use per day.There is a slight learning curve with this Panasonic microwave which would not suit itself very well in a Office environment with many people, commercial microwave typically selling for $300 and above it's a simple one or two button operation.
