Krokbragd: How to Design & Weave

Krokbragd is not an easy weave. The book gives excellent detailed info on how to set up your loom and weave. I am also a visual learner, so with the book and YouTube I learned a great deal. Her tips are excellent and every problem she discusses are all problems I had most of which I could not figure out on my own without the book. So, excellent resource.

I became interested in krokbragd after watching Kelly Casanova’s videos done on the rigid heddle. She shows both double heddle method and single heddle with pick up stick and heddle rod method. I prefer the double heddle method. This book explains the double heddle method in terms of shaft loom threading which is confusing for people not familiar with shaft looms, and she uses a different sequence from the one Kelly uses. Bottom line, if you’re a rigid heddle user, you have to “translate” the entire book from shaft loom terms to rigid heddle terms, especially tricky if you’re using double heddles instead of a single heddle with a pickup stick and a heddle rod. There’s really very little information on how to design and notate, a few pages at most, and again it’s aimed at shaft loom users. There are 6 patterns, but only one specifically notated for a rigid heddle, and most require more shafts than a rigid heddle has. The part on color theory could have been eliminated as that is general knowledge having nothing to do with krokbragd. Some day when I get an 8 shaft loom I’ll be able to make full use of this book, so I’ll keep it for future use.

I am so pleased to add this resource to my bookshelf. I have read the book cover to cover and feel many of my lingering questions have been answered. I adore this book, it will be on the bedside table a little longer. Definitely recommend. As the author states, this book assumes you are able to warp and weave already and have a working understanding of basic fundamentals. This isn’t a “learn to weave” book, it’s a “learn to weave Krokbragd” book so it shouldn’t get dinged points for not being a book that teaches weaving from the ground floor. This is the book I’ve long been searching for to round out my understanding of this structure, thank you so much for your work in publishing this. One other little happy thing- I love when authors specify what type of loom the drafts are reflective of so that I know if I need to invert tie-up: in this case a rising shed/jack loom.

Good book to learn krokbragd. But there are some errors in the sample patterns. Hoping I can find an errata page. By the time I started shoreline through the samples, I had learned enough to figure out when there was a mistake.

This author has made Krogbragd so easy to understand and the projects are completely usable. Looking forward to her next book.

I typically don't write reviews on books related to arts/craftsy/hobbies because i'm kinda hard to please and it's really a fault of mine and rarely the authors so i keep my thoughts to myself.......... well not this time.I love this book. i just got it today and i've already read the entire book. i'm a newer weaving (weaving for 8 months) and this book has so much detail on how to do what looks complex with ease. the directions are clear, concise, and the pictures are clear and inspiring.if this is a style of weaving you'd like to try jump on this book, trust me, you won't regret the purchase.

I do reviews for my weaving guild. Buying most of them on Amazon is the way to go. It is a book for beginner's as well as advanced weavers. The author has written very clear instructions about the weave as well as provide patterns to utilize krokbragd and weave lovely textiles. There is also a section on using rigid-heddle loom which is the beginner loom of the moment. It is well documented with history, colorful photos and how-to. The photos are a great adjunct for a visual person that needs photos for instruction.

I bought this book hoping it would provide more detail on weaving krokbragd on a rigid heddle loom than one can find in the brief treatment in Jane Patrick’s book or in YouTube videos. Specifically, I was hoping for guidance on weaving krokbragd with two heddles. I’ve just gone through three days of warping and re-warping, over and over, in the attempt to get the instructions to work. No luck. I’d say this is my own stupidity, but I had no difficulty producing krokbragd using Patrick’s instructions with a pickup stick and a heddle rod. The issue seems to lie in Greenlaw’s instructions for two heddles.One problem is that she explains the rigid heddle method by reference to floor looms (in terms of shafts and treadling). She says she’s presupposing basic knowledge of weaving, but that’s not the problem. A lot of rigid heddle weavers, who understand their own looms perfectly well, simply don’t know anything about floor or table looms. Another problem is that while she provides apparently clear instructions for warping, she doesn’t describe what the thread pattern will look like in front of the heddle in each of the three steps, so you have no idea if you made a warping error. I found I could not get clear sheds, and since I didn’t understand what threads were supposed to be raised in each of the three steps of the sequence, I had no idea where to put my shuttle. When I cranked up the tension to get clear sheds, I ended up with plain weave. I’ve read the book over and over and I still have no idea where I was going wrong.So it’s back to Patrick and a heddle rod. Greenlaw’s book was, unfortunately, a complete waste of money.

I love Krokbragd. I’ve woven a few pieces using the pick up stick and heddle rod method as recommended in Jane Patrick’s excellent book. However after a couple of string breaks I thought I’d like to try the two heddle method for a big piece I’d planned. Also was interested in seeing more patterns.I should have paid more attentions to the reviews but I thought, I’ve woven quite a bit on my rigid heddle loom, used pick up sticks, heddle rods etc so I’m sure I’ll work it all out. Hubris!The section for rigid heddle users isn’t great. It does need a diagram for warping and threading. I managed to work it out and Got it to work. However, the issue is with the heddle sequence. If you follow the book it doesn’t work for other patterns using pick up stick and string heddle. I puzzled over it and then by trial and error found that it’s in the wrong order! To translate over to Patrick and other’s patterns it should start with front heddle neutral, back heddle lowered, then both heddles up and finally front heddle lowered, back heddle in neutral. I think the book’s sequence works with the one rigid heddle pattern in the book.Nice book if you have a shaft loom and some interesting stuff on history but overall not useful for me.

I have yet to read this book from cover to cover but it is very well presented with lots of photographs, pleasing colour choices and clear instructions. It is exactly what I was hoping for as I bought the book unseen!

Well written,far beyond what I have come to expect of self published books.For anyone wishing to learn to weave and design krokbragd this is the book I would recommend. Much clearer than Hoskins in my humble opinion.Would have preferred a print version but was unwilling to wait,a great addition to any weaver's library.
