The cord cover is 1/2 inch diameter. Most cables will fit.

Say you only want to cover half the cord, will it slide up and down the uncovered part? Or be stationary where you place it?

it will definitely slide up and down. You can adjust as necessary. If you have thicker cords (power, etc) then go for the larger size. 1/4 inch is good for a few speaker wires and 1 maybe 2 HDMI.
