Fab light

This arrrives in a brown cardboard box with Fragile marked on more than one side & a barcode label.Box measures approx 31cm x 26.5cm x 28cm.Inside the box, the shade is packed well in polystyrene & also wrapped in a plastic bag.The included ceiling rose is matte black, with a diameter of 12cm & a height of 2.5cm.This is fitted with an E27 bulb.If you are fairly handy, fitting these is a simple job, but if you are not sure it's best to get it fitted by a qualified electrician as you will need to isolate the correct lighting circuit & make sure it's off before removing your existing ceiling rose as well as feeling competent to fit a noggin between the joists to ensure your rose can carry the weight (there may already be one there depending on how long ago the ceiling rose was put up.)The shade itself is 25cm deep, when fitted with the absolute minimum drop height from ceiling to bottom of shade would be 36-37cm.Absolute maximum drop when fitted would be approx 175cm from ceiling to bottom of shade. (I'd only rely on 150cm as I don't know how consistent the length of wire would be between units)You can adjust to have a drop of anywhere between those two extremes depending on the location & your ceiling height.In the daytime, when the light is off the shade is reflective & silvery with swirls that catch the light in light rainbow colours that change as you change viewing position.In the evening with a bulb on the light shines throuhg changing the colour of the shade (it will look more blue with a cool bulb, more orangey/red with a warm one) & the pattern looks very different as there is a pattern on the inside of the shade of holes that the light shines through.It completely changes the look of the shade.This feels like a decent quality shade.You will need a Phillips screwdriver to fix the bracket to the noggin & your electrical screwdrivers to fit the ceiling rose.The reason you fit the bracket to a noggin (a lump of wood going across from one joist to the next) is so that it can take the weight of the heavier lightshade.Paper or light cloth shades weigh a fair bit less.Not using one can mean the rose pulls out of the ceiling.This is really beautiful when up & I think if I had the right location would look stunning in a cluster of 3 all at different drops.Sadly my ceilings aren't high enough so I will just enjoy the one I have.

Very nicely made lamp pendant and shaded. Create a night effect when lit up and also as a decoration when it is not. Very well made.

I am going to give this light fitting five stars because of the stunning effects it creates. The photos in the listing, and hopefully some of mine give a fair impression of the colours and patterns produced when the glass shade is lit from within. You could experiment with bulbs of different light outputs, and even colours, now that LEDs have replaced the older very limited incandescent lighting. I'm not sure how the amazing depth and reflections are achieved, but a number of techniques seem to be in play. There is a whitish coating on the inside that looks slightly rubbed in places where the shade has been handled, but I can't see any ill-effects where it is thin. It would be best to handle this shade very carefully in any event, because it looks fragile. When not lit, it has a mirror surface that is also very decorative.The shade is supplied in a strong cardboard box, sandwich between two hollowed-out polystyrene blocks that protect it from impacts and hold it in place. A fairly standard black enamelled metal ceiling rose is attached to the matching plastic light fitting (E27, large Edison screw) by a black three- wire flex that can be lengthened or shortened, with the excess coiled in the rose. The trumpet-shaped holder has a large threaded plastic ring to secure the shade. A steel bracket needs to be screwed to the ceiling using the screws supplied. Usually, this would be into a timber joist or similar, but masonry plugs are also supplied. Two machine screws with washers and nuts go through slots in the bracket, and through holes in the face of the rose, and terminated with black-coated knurled brass nuts. Electrical connections are taken care of by a terminal block or screw-on connectors, both of which are included in the bag of fittings. An electrician may be needed for this part of the job. Attention to detail even extends to providing a little screwdriver for the terminal block, and a pair of white gloves for handling the shade. There is also a video link to help with installation.
