After an act of piracy onboard the ship of the Spanish nobleman Belmonte Lostados, son of the Commandant of Oran, Constanze, who is betrothed to Belmonte, and her maid Blondchen, along with Belmonte's manservant Pedrillo, who is engaged to Blondchen, fell into the hands of pirates. All three have been bought from the slave market by the wealthy Pasha Selim, a Spanish renegade (a convert to Islam from Christianity) and brought to his palace. Pedrillo has succeeded in sending word of their whereabouts to Belmonte.

Although Kurt Moll has a star turn as the villain ...
Although Kurt Moll has a star turn as the villain, Osmin, and although Inga Nielsen is fetching and vocally attractive, and although the production is mostly sensible, the performance on the whole does really survive the sludge and surprising rhythmic insecurities of Georg Solti's conducting.

Wonderful production
I wanted to give a really nice present to my wife, and took advantage of a casual remark she made about Entfuhring -- that it is such a nice opera, but seldom seen in the US. So I went to Amazon, and voila - a lovely present. She loved it, and so did I. All the voices are perfect, and all the acting, scenes, the whole performance -- like Mozart would have wanted.

An Osmin for the ages
This is an excellent production of Die Entfuhrung. In this performance it is Kurt Moll who steals the show as Osmin. With his stunning bass voice and his inspired and comic stage presence. A truly great performance by him. The other singers are all top notch. And Solti's conducting is very good.

The best 'Abduction' available
I found this a very fine production of Mozart's masterwork "The Abduction from the seraglio". What can we say about the music but that it is Mozart at his best, his second master opera (of the seven he wrote in the last decade of his life) and therefore some of the most beautiful music ever composed. The production is lively and colorful, with exquisite sets and costumes: one exception: why is Pasha Selim dressed in western-style clothes when he first appears? Kurt Moll's performance is excellent as usual and I also liked Lillian Watson as a very funny Blondie. The opera is sung in the original German, with English subtitles.
