Good Starter Spice
While this Frontier version of Berbere is not a traditional berbere spice blend, it's a very good starter spice (seller should use authentic Ethiopian cumin & bishops weed). I use Frontier's berbere as a starter, from which I add a bit more fenugreek, cardamom, my homemade ground dried shallots and hot chili pepper (we like it hotter), a little bit of smoked paprika and a few dashes of clove. I lightly roast my spices stovetop in a skillet before adding to the Frontier berbere. Leftovers are stored in an air tight plastic container in my freezer. Take a chance and play around a bit with your spices (small samplings) until you create the exact taste for you and your family. Another key to great homemade Ethiopian meals is using niter kibbeh (spiced butter). All of the essential ingredients for making a great niter kibbeh are available here at Amazon (Brundo Market Store), on Etsy and Ebay. Enjoy...

I put this stuff on everything.
So good. I've been buying this product for years. I accidentally bought a different brand once and it was not even close. Definitely prefer this over others I've tried.

This stuff makes me so happy.
Disclaimer: I don't know what 'authentic' is. There's a delicious friendly Ethiopian restaurant at the end of my block, and growing up my parents made sure I was exposed to seemingly every world cuisine they could, but I don't have vivid childhood memories of grandma cooking this sort of thing. That said, I cannot get enough of Frontier's berbere blend. I sweat chopped onion and minced garlic with butter and/or oil for half an hour, add berbere and lentils and water, simmer for another half hour, and it results in a fantastic lunch all week for like forty cents a serving. The depth of flavor is incredible and the price totally reasonable compared to any other option I've found. The trickiest bit is moderating it to avoid nuking taste buds for anyone who prefers a milder dish, but if you're looking at berbere in the first place you probably know what you're getting into.So good.

Good spice with just a hint of heat
This is tasty berbere spice. It's smells great. It is a little spicy, I'd rate it a 3 out of 5 for typical white america. It's good for me and mild to my husband, but I'm not comfortable feeding it to my 14 month old (whereas she loves the mild dishes from our local restaurant), if that helps figure out the spicy factor.I still can't nail my recipes as good as our local ethiopian restaurant, but her spice and dishes are her own family recipes, so that's hard to match. I'm sure it's purely subjective, but I feel like I seem to be missing a little something from this spice (but it could be that I'm just missing nitter kibbeh)Otherwise, I like it and will be buying again. I wish they made a mild version so I could feed my baby and in laws.

Excellent, flavorful, berbere.
Excellent berbere. I add a bit more fenugreek to mine and a touch of smoked paprika, but right out of the bag this is exceptional. It is so much simpler and more cost effective to buy this than the literally 10-15 spices I was using to mix my own berebere -- stocking all those spices, making sure I had them, mixing batches up, very time consuming.I would say this is fairly spicy. Not the hottest I've ever had from restaurants, but definitely has some heat. I use about 2-3 tablespoons in a typical dish, and I find that is the right level of spice and flavor.

Quite spicy, kinda bitter.
I think that this berbere has a great heat level :) it's quite spicy, but there's a little too much fenugreek in it, that makes it taste pretty bitter. It's a decent amount for the price but the formula/ingredient rations should be slightly adjusted.
